In Foodie Heaven (a guide to the Lisbon food scene)
We initially intended for Portugal to be a convenient layover stop on our way to Spain, but it ended up being the culinary highlight of our entire trip. Every single meal was packed with flavor and served with love. The sights and history of Portugal are incredible–check out my 4-day Lisbon itinerary for details–but the food deserved its own post.
Here's my food guide of places we visited in the Lisbon region, plus a list of ones we will be back for.

Time Out Market - Lisbon
Av. 24 de Julho 49, 1200-479 Lisboa, Portugal
This concept opened in 2014 and is the first food hall by Time Out Magazine. Today the publication has similar concepts in major cities across the world, featuring concepts by the best chefs in each city. We stopped by to browse and grab a coffee.

Curral Dos Caprinos - Sintra
R. 28 de Setembro, 2710-125 Sintra, Portugal
This is a MUST TRY in Sintra. I cannot stress enough how flavorful every dish was.
What to order: The Roast Young Goat, Stewed Young Goat, Roast Veal, and the Roast Duck
Dinner
Taberna Sal Grosso - Lisbon
Calçada do Forte 22, 1100-256 Lisboa, Portugal
This is my favorite restaurant in all of Lisbon! YOU NEED A RESERVATION. The restaurant only has 6 tables and no one ever cancels so your chances are slim to none without a reservation.
What to order:
- The Pork Belly Empanadas
- Rabo de Boi (Oxtail)
- Burras (pork cheek) - This is so far my favorite meat of all time!
- Leite Creme Maracuja (passion fruit crème brûlée)
The Pork Belly Empanadas Rabo de Boi (Oxtail)
Burras (pork cheek) - This is so far my favorite meat of all time!
The meat was so soft that it came right off the bone (look at that clean cheek bone in the second photo)
Leite Creme Maracuja (passion fruit crème brulée)
They gave us 3 different "digestivos" bottles at the end to close out.
The waiter said "now time to get drunk"
This charcoal factory turned tavern offers a traditional Fado show with a 3-course dinner for 50 euros per person. The show alone is worth it and the dishes were good. Overall, we recommend this experience for a private show in the birthplace of Fado - Alfama!

A Muralha Tasca Típica Lisboa - Lisbon
R. Jardim do Tabaco 112, 1100-139 Lisboa, Portugal
We stumbled upon this little restaurant a few feet from our Airbnb and decided to give it a try. It's here where we tried Baba de Camelo for the first time. This dessert is made with sweetened condensed milk and packs so much flavor. We were so obsessed that we had it every night.
What to order:
- Vinho Verde (A Portuguese wine from the the historic Minho province in the far north of the country.)
- Picanha na Brasa (a traditional cut of beef)
- Miminhos de Porco na Brasa (Pork tenderloins)
- Rice and beans
- Baba de Camelo (Our favorite dessert of the trip!)
Vinho Verde and Baba de Camelo, AKA the dessert of dreams!
(We liked it so much we've tried to recreate it multiple times since we've been back but it's not the same.)
Cafés
Bettina & Niccolo Corallo - Lisbon
R. da Escola Politécnica 4, 1250-096 Lisboa, Portugal
This dessert shop offers a large variety of artisanal chocolates and delicious coffee.
Casa São Miguel - Lisbon
R. de São Miguel No 5, 1100-542 Lisboa, Portugal
My hot take of the trip is that the famous Pasteis de Nata, Portuguese custard tarts that are a specialty of Belem, are ALL equally delicious. So save yourself the half hour line outside of Pastéis de Belém and check out this cute café in Alfama.
Many locations throughout Lisbon
The most famous place to get cod (bacalhau) croquettes in Portugal. Although, I am not a fan of cod, but I gave these a try because these pastries are so integrated in their culture that I considered it a must while in Lisbon.
They have two options: One with their organic farm Serra cheese or one without the cheese.
Teatro da Garagem (teatro taborda) - Lisbon
Costa do Castelo 69, 1100-022 Lisboa, Portugal
This formerly abandoned theater turned bar/cafe boast a great views and drinks. FYI: it's a hike to get up there.
Museu de Cerveja - Lisbon
Terreiro do Paço – Ala Nascente nº 62 a 65, 1100-148 Lisboa, Portugal
The Museum of Beer is located one of the largest squares in Europe, the Praça do Comércio, and serves specialty beers from all the Portuguese regions.
Hotel Baia - Cascais
Passeio de Dom Luís I, 2754-509 Cascais, Portugal
This hotel, located in the beautiful beach town of Cascais, has a rooftop bar with great views and a killer cucumber gin & tonic. We loved it here so much so that we returned just to hang out at this beach the next day.
